What Factors Cause the Aging of Green PVC Conveyor Belts

Green PVC conveyor belts are widely used in food processing, logistics, electronics manufacturing, and packaging. Although PVC conveyor belts are characterized by their wear resistance, stable operation, and moderate cost, prolonged use can still lead to aging phenomena such as hardening, cracking, peeling, and delamination. So, what are the primary factors responsible for the aging of green PVC conveyor belts?

Green PVC belt

High-Temperature Environments Accelerate Aging
PVC material is relatively sensitive to high temperatures. If a conveyor belt is subjected to prolonged exposure in a high-temperature workshop, placed near drying equipment, or comes into contact with hot materials, the plasticizers within the material may easily volatilize. This leads to issues such as surface hardening, brittleness, and cracking.
Consequently, PVC conveyor belts are generally better suited for use in environments with ambient, moderate, or low temperatures.

UV Radiation and Sunlight Exposure
When exposed to sunlight for extended periods, ultraviolet (UV) radiation continuously degrades the structural integrity of PVC. This results in phenomena such as discoloration, surface chalking, and fine cracking of the conveyor belt.
Particularly in outdoor environments, UV radiation can significantly reduce the service life of PVC conveyor belts.

Corrosion by Chemical Substances
In food processing, chemical manufacturing, and general industrial production settings, conveyor belts may come into contact with oils, greases, acidic or alkaline liquids, or cleaning agents. These chemical substances gradually erode the PVC’s surface layer, leading to issues such as surface tackiness, swelling, and delamination.
Prolonged contact with highly corrosive substances will significantly accelerate the aging process.

Mechanical Wear Affects Service Life
During operation, the conveyor belt is constantly subjected to friction against rollers, idlers, and the conveyed materials. If the equipment suffers from misalignment (belt wandering), is operated under excessive loads, or is subjected to severe impact from materials, the conveyor belt’s wear rate will accelerate.
In severe cases, this can lead to edge tearing, thinning of the surface layer, or even the exposure of the internal fiber layers.

Excessive Tension and Humid Environments
If the conveyor belt is tensioned too tightly during installation, it places excessive strain on the internal fiber layers. This increases the likelihood of joint cracking and belt deformation.
Additionally, prolonged exposure to humid environments can lead to delamination, blistering, and reduced bonding strength of the conveyor belt.

Variations in Conveyor Belt Quality
The inherent quality of the PVC conveyor belt itself directly impacts its service life. Lower-quality products often exhibit deficiencies in raw materials, fabric layer structure, and manufacturing processes; consequently, they are more susceptible to premature aging. Selecting a conveyor belt of stable quality that is well-suited to actual operating conditions can effectively minimize future issues.

How to Extend the Lifespan of PVC Conveyor Belts

To mitigate aging-related issues, one should avoid exposure to high temperatures and direct sunlight, properly adjust conveyor belt tension, regularly inspect equipment operation, and perform routine cleaning and maintenance.
Additionally, selecting PVC conveyor belts with specific properties—such as abrasion resistance, oil resistance, or other specialized functions—based on industry requirements can effectively extend their service life.

The aging of green PVC conveyor belts is typically the result of the combined influence of environmental factors, mechanical stresses, and usage patterns. Only by understanding the underlying causes of aging and implementing proper maintenance practices can one successfully extend the lifespan of the conveyor belt and reduce the costs associated with equipment maintenance and replacement.
